Monroe County: Director of Conflict Defender's Office Full-time Director for the Monroe County (Rochester) Conflict Defender's Office sought. The Director supervises a staff of ten attorneys and support staff and is responsible for the functions of the Conflict Defender's Office in the Department of Public Safety. Job skills include thorough knowledge of NY Penal Law and Criminal Procedure Law and familiarity with Family Court. Duties include developing and managing a budget; maintaining records of attorneys assigned; issuing periodic reports; reviewing attorney vouchers prior to submission to assigning judges and making recommendations to assigning judges regarding payment; maintaining a brief bank; issuing an electronic newsletter; preparing an annual report; carrying a partial caseload of appellate work; and acting as liaison between the Conflict Defender's Office and other County departments, law enforcement agencies, the private bar, and other governmental agencies. Commitment to providing legal services to the indigent required. Private practice experience helpful. Above-average computer skills helpful for publication and distribution of e-newsletter and maintenance of the office web site. Salary $70,000-$90,000 DOE. Maryland: Federal Death Penalty Direct Appeal Resource Counsel The Death Penalty Working Group of the federal defender system seeks, subject to available funding, an experienced capital appellate attorney to work as an assistant federal defender to help identify and recruit qualified attorneys for appointment in federal capital direct appeals; to provide training, consultation, and support to attorneys appointed to represent persons in direct appeal proceedings challenging their federal capital convictions and death sentences; and to represent, in a limited number of direct appeal cases, persons convicted and sentenced to death in federal capital cases. New York City: Counsel, Justice Program The Justice Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law seeks an attorney for its Access to Justice Project to work on securing justice system reform. The attorney will run the BrennanCenter’s Community Oriented Defender Project, working with defenders across the country to obtain racial justice and other reforms. The attorney will also work on additional projects to improve the civil and criminal justice systems. Law Internship Program Internships are available for law students who want to gain experience in legal research and criminal law. Students can earn academic credit through Albany Law School or any participating institution. Law students work on a variety of criminal defense research projects, and participate in the preparation of case summaries for NYSDA's publications and databases. Criminal Justice Internship Program Internships are available for students who want to gain experience in criminal justice research. Students can earn academic credit through the SUNY School of Criminal Justice in Albany or any participating institution. Among its many responsibilities, NYSDA engages in the following activities: providing technical assistance to public defense providers and local, state and government officials; reviewing and analyzing public defense and relevant criminal justice research studies, reports and literature; assisting in evaluation of county public defense systems; undertaking public defense data collection, including caseload, budget and expenditure data; designing survey instruments; and assisting in reviewing and analyzing public defense legislation. The criminal justice intern works under the supervision of the Executive Director and Managing Attorney to fulfill the office's social science research needs. Library Internship Program Internships are available for students who want to gain experience in librarianship or information science. Students can earn academic credit through the School of Information Science and Policy, University at Albany or any participating library school. The Backup Center Library plays a key role in NYSDA's mission by providing research and support services to staff lawyers, public defense attorneys and government officials. Library Interns, working under the supervision of Director of Legal Information Services, will have the opportunity to interact with professional staff, government agencies, vendors and publishers. Interns will work in any or all of the following areas: reference and research, collection development, cataloging, indexing and database management, records management and space planning.
