Our mission... The New York State Defenders Association, a not-for-profit, membership organization, has been providing support to New York's criminal defense community since 1967. Its mission is to improve the quality and scope of publicly supported legal representation to low income people.

Membership NYSDA is the largest criminal defense bar association in New York and among the first statewide defense organizations to be established in the country. Membership is not just for lawyers, its open to people in the public defense client community, defense team members, such as sentencing specialists, and others committed to improving the quality of publicly supported criminal defense. Who's Who Serving on NYSDA's Board of Directors are prominent criminal defense lawyers and leaders in the New York criminal justice community. The Association's staff are experienced and dedicated professionals with diverse backgrounds in criminal law, criminal justice, information technology and a variety of other skills.
Student Opportunities Students in law school, criminal justice programs or any course of study that will lead them into the criminal justice community are an important part of NYSDA's mission. NYSDA welcomes the participation and interest of future criminal justice professionals. People interested in building a career as criminal defense lawyers or criminal justice professionals will benefit from membership in NYSDA.
